Tournament officials made the announcement in Stevens Point Tuesday. They said it took nine months to come to the decision and they believe it puts the girls tournament in the spotlight for the Green Bay area.
"We don't believe that the next best venue available is in Madison. We believe that venue is the Resch Center," Deb Hauser, the WIAA basketball tournament director said.
Officials said the girls tournament was moved so it could take place the third weekend in March. There is a conflict at the Kohl Center in Madison that weekend. WIAA leaders said the Green Bay community has stepped up to host the event.
"The University, the city, the county have really rolled up their sleeves to provide real and multiple solutions," Anderson said.
The boys basketball tournament will stay in Madison. It will be held the second week in March. Officials said moving the boys tournament to the Resch Center was ruled out because the venue isn't big enough to hold all the fans.
"Really, the capacity I think is a key part of this. The TV part of it is another issue. You know, we would have definitely had to modify our TV schedule had we chosen to move the boys," Hauser said.
Aside from the availability of the venues on the preferred dates, WIAA officials were concerned about high hotel costs in Madison. They said they've spoken with business leaders in the Green Bay area about keeping hotel rates at a reasonable price.
