Antigo school district changes drug policy

After months of debate, the Antigo School District has a new drug testing policy.  The school board voted unanimously for all new hires to take a mandatory drug test before becoming employed.

School leaders say the decision comes after several district employees were charged in a major drug investigation. Many of them were placed on leave, while others resigned.

But for one current Antigo teacher, she says, the new policy is the right move.

"It is protection for us, to show the community that we are good role models for our children," third grade teacher Martha Thorne said.

Legal council for the school district says the decision to adopt the new drug testing policy is something many schools are looking into.

"It's the tenor of the times, a lot of people are looking into it," Dean Dietrich said. "But, it has become an added priority for us."

School leaders say the policy will go into effect immediately.
