OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team trailed in both games on Wednesday afternoon but late-inning comebacks in both gave the Pointers a pair of one-run victories against the UW-Oshkosh Titans by scores of 6-5 and 8-7.
The Pointers took a 4-0 lead in the opening inning of game one, but the Titans plated two runs in the third and another three in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead.
UWSP tied the score at 5-5 on a Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) sacrifice fly in the seventh and took a 6-5 edge in the eighth with another sacrifice fly by Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy).
Cam Seidl (Appleton, WI/Fox Valley Lutheran) came on to pitch the ninth and seal the victory, earning the save, his second of the season. JP Feyereisen (River Falls, WI/River Falls) recorded the win in relief of starter Max Frederick (New London, WI/New London). Frederick pitched five innings, allowing three runs, all earned, striking out three. Feyereisen allowed two hits and struck out six in three innings.
Jirschele drove in three runs in game one while Douglas and Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) each collected two hits.
In game two, the Titans took a 3-0 lead in the opening inning. The Pointers plated two runs in the second to pull within 3-2 after two innings.
UWO plated four runs in the fourth inning to pull in front 7-2, but the Pointers battled back, scoring runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull within three, 7-4.
Gerber drove in a pair of runs in the seventh with a two-run blast to center field, his third of the season, and added an RBI single in the eighth to tie the score at 7-7. A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch by Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire North) drove in the go-ahead run later in the eighth, giving UWSP the 8-7 lead.
Seidl came on to pitch the final 1.2 innings in relief of Iverson to secure his second save of the day and third of the season. Iverson tallied the victory, his fifth of the season, allowing just two hits and striking out two.
Gerber finished game two with four RBIs while Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) collected three hits and drove in a pair of runs.
UW-Stevens Point (24-8, 12-2 WIAC) return to action with a four-game series at UW-Whitewater April 28-29. Action both days is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.
