A mother opens up, after she says her baby was beaten by the babysitter 23-year-old Christopher Schimke, from Rhinelander, is accused of beating a 9-month old baby.He now faces three felony charges.
The mother of the baby agreed to talk with Newsline 9. She asked we only use her first name.When Melinda returned home from work on April 10, 2012 she found her 9-month-old baby, Owen, badly bruised.
She says her baby sitter, 23-year-old Christopher Schimke, told her he didn't know what happened. "I guess I didn't think to much of it right away cus I was just worried about Owen," says Melinda. "I was like if you didn't know what was wrong with him, I had to find out." When Melinda took baby Owen to the emergency room, doctors told her the injuries appeared to be child abuse.So they called police.Rhinelander police say Christopher Schimke choked and hit Owen when he wouldn't stop crying.
Schimke's attorney had no comment. Melinda says she met Schimke through a friend.She says Schimke babysat for several months -without a problem."We had easter dinner with Chris," said Melinda. "I invited him here to eat with us. That was two days before this happened. Melinda said she struggled to believe Schimke, a man she thought was her friend, would do something so horrible to her 9-month old baby."I was pretty much was just like trying to figure out what else it could be besides Chris, because I really didn't think anybody could do this." According to court documents. Schimke told police he didn't tell Melinda what really happened because he wanted her to trust him.
Now, two weeks later, Melinda is shaken but relieved. And her baby, Owen, is recovering.Christopher Schimke appeared in court earlier this week.His attorney says he is still in jail. Schimke will be back in court next week.

Schimke faces three felony charges.His attorney declined to comment.
