Teen dating violence

When you think of teens dating, chances are you thinking of young smiling faces. Yet, sometimes behind those smiles there is a violent relationship.

According the Center for Disease Control and Prevention a 2010 survey showed 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men who have been raped or physically abused, also said that it happened between the age of 11 and 17.

Sue Nowak is an Alcohol and Drug Prevention Specialist from Wausau calls it a hidden problem that affect many, "We are seeing it in our area. There are reports of children in 6th or 7th grade and we are definitely seeing it in our area high schools."

In an effort to educate people about the problem, the topic of  teen dating violence will be added to series of upcoming community forums in the Wausau area.

Experts say the violence may start out with a partner always wanting to know who you're with and where you're going. Later they may try to isolate you from family and friends. Emotional, physical and sexual abuse may follow.

There are many resources out there which give detailed signs to look for and outreach programs for those seeking help. We have links to some of them:
