Pointers split season finale with Blue Devils

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Paige Meulemans (Appleton, WI/Kimberly)' walk-off home run gave the UW-Stevens Point softball team a 10th-inning victory on Saturday afternoon in game one of the season finale doubleheader against UW-Stout. The visiting Blue Devils won game two, 7-1 to force a split.

The visiting Blue Devils plated their only run of the day in the third inning, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Alison Gray.

In the seventh, the Pointers scored the game-tying run on a passed ball, as Brittany Sass (Appleton, WI/East) crossed home. With the bases loaded, Meulemans popped out to third base, ending the UWSP threat and forcing extras.

Neither team scored in extra innings until Meulemans stepped to the plate with one out in the bottom of the 10th and sent the UW-Stout pitch soaring over the left field fence, giving the Pointers the victory.

Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette) threw all 10 innings to earn the victory, scattering four hits and striking out six.

Meulemans, Katie Krueger (Plover, WI/SPASH) and Brittany Sass (Appleton, WI/East) collected UWSP's three hits.

In game two, the visiting Blue Devils plated a run in the first, two in the second and four in the third to take a 7-0 lead after two and a half innings.

The Pointers plated their lone run in the home-half of the third when Maddie Sawdey (Medford, WI/Medford) scored on a delayed double steal.
Neither team scored the rest of the way, as Stout held on for the split.

Bekah Rennicke (Mequon, WI/Homestead) suffered the loss, charged with all seven runs, five earned, in 2.2 innings of work. Jones threw the final 4.1 innings in relief, scattering five hits, striking out three.

UW-Stevens Point's season comes to a close with an overall record of 14-24, 3-13 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
