UPDATE: Fatal car crash in Portage County


Authorities say three people are dead after a fiery crash in the town of Linwood. The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning on STH 66 at Birchwood Lane.

When Portage County Sheriff's Deputies arrived they found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. According to a press release, a man was ejected from the vehicle. Authorities are not releasing his name at this time, but they say there were two others in the car. Their names have not been released.

Newsline 9 spoke with family members at the scene. They declined to go on camera, but say one of the victims was a 19-year-old UWSP student. The other two were in their twenties.

Crews say the crash knocked out power to some homes in the area. Police say alcohol may have been a factor, but an investigation is ongoing.

The county coroner tells Newsline 9 an autopsy will be done in Madison to identify the bodies.

Officials said when deputies arrived at the crash they found the vehicle on fire. After firefighters put out the flames, authorities said they found three of the vehicle's passengers dead.

Authorities said one person was ejected from the vehicle, while the other two were still inside. 

Officials said they are still trying to identify the three passengers, and that an investigation of the crash is underway.

Investigators said they suspect alcohol to be a possible factor.
