Pointer baseball drops Monday twinbill at Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The 13th-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team suffered a pair of defeats on Monday afternoon against the Warhawks of UW-Whitewater in a pair of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) games. The Warhawks won the opener 15-9 and won a 3-0 shutout victory in the nightcap.

The Pointers took the early lead in the game's opening inning on a Byran Clark RBI, but the host Warhawks capitalized on two UWSP errors to plate two runs in the home half of the inning and take a 2-1 lead.

The Pointers quickly regained the lead with a four-run second inning, sparked by a leadoff home run by Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead). Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy), Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) and Clark also drove in runs in the inning to give UWSP the 5-1 lead.

The Warhawks plated a run in the third to cut the deficit to three, 5-2, after the third inning and scored four in the fourth, again capitalizing on a UWSP error and a three-run home run by Marty Herum to retake the lead, 7-5.

UW-Stevens Point had the answer in the fifth, as Schilter drove in a run and Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville)'s two-run double once again gave the Pointers a lead, 8-7.

Two runs in the sixth sent the seesaw battle back in UWW's favor, but the Pointers managed a run in the seventh on a Douglas RBI groundout, tying the score at 9-9.

From there it was all Warhawks, as UWW plated two runs in the home-half of the seventh and another four runs in the eighth to pull away for the 15-9 victory.

Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire North) suffered the loss, his third of the season, allowing eight runs, seven earned, in three innings of relief work. Starter Max Frederick (New London, WI/New London) and relievers Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) and Matt Freeman (Green Bay, WI/Southwest) combined to throw five innings.

The offense for both teams took a back seat in game two, as Brad Stroik (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) scattered seven hits over eight innings, but runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings by the Warhawks proved to be enough as UWSP was shutout 3-0.

UWW's Eric Schmitz and Tom Kerndt combined to hold the Pointers to just four hits in game two, striking out a combined 10 batters.

Jirschele, Douglas and Clark accounted for all the Pointers hits in game two.

UW-Stevens Point (25-11, 13-7 WIAC) close out the regular season on Friday and Saturday, May 4-5 at home against UW-Platteville. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
