Woman with rare heart procedure has 3 week check-up today

MARSHFIELD (WAOW) -

The first woman to have a rare heart procedure in North Central Wisconsin had her three-week check-up today.

Doctors say 86-year-old Helene Sleight was not healthy enough to have open-heart surgery. But she was the perfect candidate for a procedure called TAV-R.

The Marshfield Clinic and St. Joseph's Hospital are partnered up for her care.

The procedure involves opening up the aortic valve, which may have been clogged through the years.

Almost a month later, Sleight says she's taking it one day at a time.

"I didn't know, and I thought if I didn't make it with this procedure, I wouldn't know the difference. But I came through and I'm happy as can be," Sleight said.

Wausau Aspirus Hospital leaders say they will also soon be performing the procedure. They hope to be doing that in early June.
