Minn. Senate approves $496M construction bill

The Minnesota Senate has approved a nearly $500 million package of construction projects.

The Senate approved the bill 45-22 on Monday, hours after it easily passed the House on a 99-32 vote.

The Senate squeezed more projects into the bill, moving $2.5 million from an economic development fund to pay for a floodwall in South St. Paul and a battered women's shelter in Minneapolis. The House can either approve the changes or send the bill to a conference committee for negotiations.

The bill relies on $496 million in borrowing to pay for work on campus buildings, bridges, roads, flood mitigation and renovations to the state Capitol.

Funding for several local projects was cut, including a St. Paul Saints ballpark and civic center expansions in Mankato, St. Cloud and Rochester.
