DNR bans deer baiting in some NW Wis. counties

MADISON (AP) -

The Department of Natural Resources is banning baiting and feeding of white-tailed deer in some northwestern Wisconsin counties.

The ban takes effect Thursday in Barron, Burnett, Polk and Washburn counties.

The DNR says it's taking the action after a wild deer in Washburn County tested positive for chronic wasting disease. DNA testing confirmed the deer was from that area.

Barron, Burnett and Polk counties are within a 10-mile radius of where the infected deer was found. State law requires a ban on deer baiting and feeding within a 10-mile radius of where a deer infected with chronic wasting is found.

Baiting and feeding of deer is now banned in 32 Wisconsin counties. Baiting and feeding of deer increases the risk of spreading disease by concentrating deer in one spot.
