ANGOLA, Ind. – UW-Stevens Point sophomore Mary Welch (Madison, WI/West) shot
an opening-round 77 (+7) and is currently tied for 10th place after day one of
the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship at Zollner Golf
Welch's score of 77 led all Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference golfers in the championship.
"Mary played very solid today," said head coach Melissa Martin. "Nothing more than a bogey today which is better than she has played all spring. If a few more putts can fall for birdie in the next couple days, her scores will drop. She had several up and downs to save par today, so her short game is great right now."
Welch opened the day with four bogeys on the back nine, but overcame the slow start to finish the back nine one over.
"The weather was nicer than it has been," said Welch. "I feel like I was more positive and hit the ball better. My short game was pretty solid, a few more putts should have dropped, but it was a good day overall."
Williams College holds a three-stroke lead over 14-time defending champion Methodist University in the race for the team title.
Second-round tee times for the championship begin with the morning wave at 8:00 a.m. and the afternoon wave at 12:30 p.m. off the No. 1 and 10 tees Wednesday, May 9 at Zollner Golf Course.
