U.S. Postal Service to keep rural post offices open

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -

The U.S. Postal Service says it will keep hundreds of rural post offices open with shorter hours.

This will save the mail agency half a billion dollars each year. They are addressing concerns of rural residents opposed to post office closings.

About 3,700 low-revenue rural post offices were going to close or consolidate starting sometime after May 15. This was part of a cost-cutting effort to save money.

The Postal Service now plans to seek regulatory approval for the new plan and get community input, a process that could take several months.
