LA CROSSE, Wis. – The third-seeded University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point baseball team could only tally two runs against second-seeded UW-Whitewater as it fell in its opening game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament 4-2 at North Campus Field on Friday afternoon.
The Warhawks took an early 1-0 lead after a Marty Herum RBI single in the first but the Pointers evened the game in their half of the second on freshman Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas)'s RBI double to right field.
UWW then gained a 4-1 advantage after plating single runs in the second, fourth and eighth innings, highlighted by a home run by Steve Bartlein.
UWSP battled in the ninth inning as it scored one run and had the tying run at first base but could not push across the equalizer falling 4-2.
Cam Seidl (Appleton, WI/Fox Valley Lutheran) (7-3) suffered the loss as he allowed four earned runs in eight innings while striking out five and walking two.
Eric Schmitz (8-2) earned the victory allowing one run in 6.1 innings.
Coday led the way for the Pointers as he collected three of the five hits in the game including two doubles and two RBI.
