Some students work to avoid huge college debt

DULUTH (AP) -

Roughly three-fourths of college graduates in the Duluth area are likely to carry debt. But the Duluth News Tribune found that some have been working hard to avoid it.

The newspaper reports that students graduating with little or no debt say planning, hard work and creativity have helped. Some have taken advantage of scholarships, others have found friends willing to share meal plans that don't get used.

Some say saving at a young age also helped. Some clip coupons or find other ways to save.

But for those who can't avoid loans, debt can be huge.

University of Minnesota Duluth students who took out loans graduate with an average debt of $31,000. Students at the University of Wisconsin-Superior are graduating with an average debt of $24,000.
