Wisconsin Rapids Boys and Girls Club gets landscape makeover

The Wisconsin Rapids Area Boys and Girls Club on Baker Drive got a much needed landscape makeover on Saturday. Club leaders said it was all thanks to the generosity of the Home Depot.

"It gives our kids a great lesson about giving back to the community," Executive Director Robert Wefel said.

Wefel said the $3,500 dollar grant from the Home Depot Foundation will make a big difference.

"I think when you have a great environment for kids, they're more eager to learn."

Dozens of volunteers planted trees, cleared rocks and spread sand to improve the overall look of the club.

"We're right on a main corner and the main hub where people both leave and arrive to town so certainly it makes the facility look a lot nicer," Wefel said.

One of the biggest improvements: a new sidewalk.

"Just so when the kids stepped off the bus they wouldn't step into a mud puddle," he said.

Volunteers said they didn't mind doing yard work for a good cause.

"We care about not only our building, but the kids in our community and the community itself," Home Depot employee Cole Plowman told Newsline 9.

And club leaders said the landscape changes can also inspire confidence in area children.

"It's exciting to them to know that they're important to the community and that people would do something so special just for them," Wefel said.

Club officials said they always need volunteers. If you'd like to help the community grow by donating time to the Wisconsin Rapids Area Boys and Girls Club, click here: http://www.bgcwra.org/
