UWSP Upward Bound program in jeopardy

UW Stevens Point has hosted Upward Bound programs on campus for more than 40 years. Now, the head of the project says funding cuts could put it in jeopardy.  It usually admits students from low income families or who will be first-generation college students, some may be struggling academically.

UWSP Upward Bound Program Director, Henry Wojnicki says he learned last week that the U.S. Department of Education released a list of schools that would receive funding. He says, "It was a shock. We were not on that list, after having a program for more than 40 years."

Wojnicki says current funding for the program ends May 31st.  Right now, they say the price  tag for the education enrichment program is half a million dollars year. Most of it comes from the federal government. UWSP and private donations also provide a portion of the money.

School leaders say they plan to appeal the funding cut as they scramble to try to continue the upcoming summer  program that brings students to the UWSP campus.

A meeting previously scheduled for interested parents takes place this evening in Wausau. It is at the UW Stevens Point Leadership Center in Wausau at 200 Washington Street.
