Brazil moves to cut hotel costs before Rio+20

Brazil says it is taking steps to lower the spiraling cost of accommodations during the upcoming United Nations' Rio+20 conference on sustainable development.

A statement Wednesday from the office of President Dilma Rousseff says that the Brazilian tour operator providing accommodations during the event in Rio de Janeiro has agreed to scrap its 25 percent management fee.

Also, hotels will no longer require guests to book weeklong stays during the June 20-22 conference, as many had been doing.

The statement says the two steps could bring decreases of more than 60 percent in accommodation costs.

The changes come after an announcement by the European Parliament that it had canceled its entire 11-person delegation because of hotel costs.
