Three Highway 51 crashes cause travel delays

Many people headed home from their Memorial Day vacations Monday. But some travelers coming from the Northwoods hit some big delays.

Jodi Lehrke's family spent the weekend in the Northwoods. On Monday, they headed back to Wausau. But near the city, they hit some unexpected delays.

"We noticed that there was a lot of heavy traffic slowing down and stopped. We were kind of wondering what was going on," Lehrke said.

Three crashes happened within a few hours, and a few miles of each other. The first happened just after 2 P.M. near exit 188 on Highway 51. Officers wouldn't say what happened, but Newsline 9's reporter saw a boat and trailer towed away. Officers said one person had minor injuries.

"We did get off at Bridge Street, kind of detoured through town so we missed heavy traffic," Lehrke said.

The next crash happened around 4 P.M. near exit 185 in Rothschild. It involved three cars and one person was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

The third crash happened just feet away around 5:30 P.M. Two cars were involved--one appeared to have heavy damage to the front end.

All three crashes backed up holiday traffic for several miles, making it tougher for travelers on Highway 51 to get home.

Newsline 9 tried to find out what caused the crashes. The Marathon County Sheriff's Department has not released any more information at this time.
