Community mourns teens killed in crash

It was tough news for students coming back from a holiday weekend.

"It is a very somber mood," Antigo High School Principal Tom Zamzow said.

Two of their classmates, 18 year old Jeffrey Smith and 18 year old Jacob Arrowood were killed in a crash Monday night.

The Langlade County Sheriff's officers say the teens were with three friends driving though an intersection on Hill Road and Highway 64 near Antigo.  Officers say the car failed to stop at a stop sign, colliding with a van.

18 year olds Dillon Sus and Dustin Bricko were also in the car and are in critical condition. 17 year old Matthew West Waldner was also hurt, but recovering in the hospital.

a 65 year old man and 9 year old grandson were also taken to the hospital. Authorities say they're expected to be okay.

At Antigo High School, students learned about the crash early Tuesday morning.

"With social media there were so many rumors that we wanted to set everyone straight about what the facts were," Zamzow said.

Counselors were also available throughout the day.

"There was a steady flow of students in there," Zamzow said. "These type of situations affect students differently, especially if they were close with the students who passed away."

The two that died in crash, Jeffrey Smith and Jacob Arrowood were planning to graduate this Sunday.

Now, they won't get to do that. But, they'll still be remembered.

"In the past we have had a family member accept the diploma," Zamzow explained.

And he says that will likely happen this time. As a small community tries to cope with a big loss.
