Starving dogs get a second chance

Gabrielle has been through a lot since he and Christine Bremer first met.

"He was privately adopted to the very wrong person," Bremer explained.

Bremer used to own Gabrielle, until last year when she moved. She gave up the dog for adoption. But just last month, she saw Gabrielle again. And what she saw, shocked her.

"I saw him on TV, I wasn't sure it was my dog because I was under the impression he was being cared for well," Bremer said.

But, he wasn't. Wausau Police say they found the dog starving to death in a basement. The owner said she couldn't afford food and medicine to care for her pets. She now faces two misdemeanors and the dogs were taken away.

"This was a good faith adoption that turned out wrong," Mary Kirlin, Executive Director of the Marathon County Humane Society.

But now, Bremer and Gabrielle have been reunited.

"He's happy to be home," Bremer said.

As soon as she saw our story on Newsline 9 she called the Marathon County Humane Society and asked for the dog back. After some work, she did.

"We see the spark come back in his eyes again."

The other dog rescued from that basement has also found his spark. Chance's new owners didn't want to go on camera but you can friend the boxer on Facebook and see pictures of his recovery.

"You sometimes focus on the negative but this worked out and justice is being served all around," Kirlin said.

And it's a second chance for the animals and their owners.
