Don Harris of Neillsville is the Jefferson Award honoree for the month of June. Don is a volunteer with the American Legion Post 73. His nomination submission form says he spends 50-80 hours a week at the legion.
Harris spent 40 years in the military working as a Veterinarian. When he retired he says he missed the camaraderie of military life. That led him to the Legion. When Post 73 opened a new community building, he volunteered to become the manager for a year, collecting no paycheck. Six years later, he continues his work at the legion, with no pay.
Don is also involved in Rock Creek Disabled Outdoors (RCDO) a group that gives the disabled a chance to hunt and experience the great outdoors. In addition to helping with the hunts he has donated 700 acres of land for disabled hunters to use.
