Pine River Elementary closes for good

Students at Pine River Elementary School in Merrill had their last day of classes Thursday, and it's the last time they'll be students there.

The district decided to close the school to save money. Interim superintendent Bruce Anderson has estimated closing the school will save close to $150,000.

Students at Pine River will now be split between Washington Elementary and Kate Goodrich Elementary.

Pine River, meantime, will be turned into a head start program.

"We have had a great year for students," said Anderson. "Our kids have had just a tremendous year."

Some parents had fought the decision to close the school, but in the end the board decided it had to happen.

"We're getting smaller, we have to find a way to be more efficient, and it's always awkward because it doesn't play out equally for everybody," said Anderson. "We don't enjoy doing that, but we have to look at the big picture."

The superintendent says teachers at Pine River will be reassigned throughout the district.
