Stevens Point leaders have voted to tear down the remaining portion of the Center Point Mall.
The Community Development Authority unanimously approved this action Tuesday night.
"There's a lot of emotion around this building," Mayor Andrew Halverson said. "We need to do what's best to get optimum redevelopment success."
Authorities had looked at other options, including selling the space as is and let private businesses take over.
"That's the gold plated option but everyone knows that will cost more," Community Development Authority committee chair Andrew Beveridge said.
Numerous other committee members agree. Many said there hasn't been any interest in developing the site as it sits.
"If we want to keep it, how long are we willing to wait to try to attract a private sector party to try to develop it?" Beveridge said.
And city leaders say time is running out.
"We will not have enough time to do everything we need to do next construction season, " Halverson explained.
The city will now take bids from developers who might be interested in buying the land.
More snow, freezing rain, sleet, and wind on the way.
