Area bus driver fired after drinking concerns

(WAOW) -

A school bus driver has been fired, after DC Everest school officials say he was suspected of drinking.

The name of the First Student driver has not been released.

School officials say the man smelled of alcohol, when he showed up at Evergreen Elementary for an end of the year field trip.

The assistant superintendent tells Newsline 9 that a teacher became suspicious and told the principal.

According to First Student officials, the man's blood alcohol was below 0.03, which less than the legal limit for commercial drivers.

But both First Student company officials and school leaders say the number one priority was to keep students safe.

An official from First Student says the driver has been with the company for five years and has not had any prior incidents.

The Everest Metro Police Department is investigating, but authorities say they learned about the incident days after it happens.

Investigators say that makes it tough to look into the allegations that the driver had been drinking.
