Summer event season kicks off in Wausau

The first official day of summer is only a week away. With summer right around the corner, many area businesses are gearing up for the seasonal rush.

Summer time means a lot of dough at Polito's Pizza.

"We plan the whole year around this season," General Manager Dan Sosnowski said.

Employees say warm weather brings people downtown and into the restaurant. And a jam-packed season of local summer events doesn't hurt either.

"It brings in more people that wouldn't normally come to the downtown area and gets us out there more," Sosnowski said.

This summer downtown Wausau will host concerts on the square, weekly farmer's markets and festivals.

"They are huge events. A lot of hotel stays, people eating at restaurants, going to gas stations. It is a huge economic impact," Director of Wausau Area Events Kari Rasmussen said.

Event planners say the 400 block concerts attract roughly 2,500 people every week. Close to 25,000 people attend the city's annual balloon rally in July.

"Our mantra is to bring the community together by using events and we believe we do that," Rasmussen said.

Down the road at The Mint Cafe, Owner Joe Pepowski says he adds more staff to beat the rush.

"We have plenty of people to handle the rushes we get," Pepowski said. "We have the best spot in town."

And this year the area will get an added boost. The Badger State Summer Games kicks off this weekend for the first time in Wausau. Leaders say that event will bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars to the local economy.

"Without events bringing in visitors we wouldn't have the great restaurants we have. The more we bring in the more quality and quantity of our city," Executive Director of the Wausau Convention and Visitors Bureau Darien Schaefer said.

A rush of business, just in time for summer.
