Hairdresser battling third round of cancer cuts hair for Locks of Love

Before she was old enough to be trusted with a pair of scissors, Renee Budsberg's career path was clear.

"Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a beautician," said Budsberg. "I just like making people beautiful."

That -- she knew for sure. But a twist of fate threatened to trim her career short -- cancer.

"It was a shock," said Budsberg. "But then I just -- I'm going to beat it and I did it for my family, my friends, I was just going to beat it."

Budsberg faced the first round with thinning shears in one hand and her head held high. Some days, she says she struggled to keep going.

"The chemo, I didn't care about but losing my hair was the worst," said Budsberg.

"Everybody knows someone that has been affected by cancer and I just wanted to do my part to help out a little bit," said Kimberly Kopplin.

Budsberg has been cutting Kopplin's fringe for the past two decades. This would be Kopplin's third donation to Locks of Love.

"You get to a certain point in your life and your just does not want to grow as fast as it used to but I said, I'm going to do this," said Kopplin. "I got to do this for Renee."

"Now that I've gone through cancer, I help a lot more people," said Budsberg.

Through the years, Budsberg barely put down her clippers long enough for doctor appointments. Keeping her hands busy took her mind off the cancer that coursed through her veins.

"Her amazing struggle and her amazing triumph -- I really think she's a good example of the power of the human spirit," said Kopplin.

Budsberg's battle is far from finished, but each day she's grateful for new opportunities.

"I would take it again and not give it to my children or my grandkids or the neighbor kids down the road," said Budsberg.

And the duo hopes their donation will help heal the heart of someone else.
