Strong winds cause plenty of damage

High winds from Thursday night's storms caused damage in our area and knocked out power to thousands.

Marathon County Sheriff's officers say there was damage throughout the area as winds gusted higher than 40 miles an hour. They say trees, power lines, and limbs were knocked down.

Still, a sheriff's lieutenant says there was no major property damage reported, and no one was hurt.

Newsline 9 spoke with Cherri Sarazen, a resident of the Town of Stettin. She and her husband had three trees fall during the night, but they didn't realize it until this morning.

"He noticed that there was more light coming through, and it was because the tree was not there anymore," said Sarazen. She said there was damage to her dog kennel, air conditioner, and some shingles on the roof.

Other counties saw some damage as well. Lincoln County had to call in the Merrill Street Department to remove trees and limbs that had fallen. Wood County saw more minor damage. Some branches were knocked down, and some customers lost power, according to sheriff's officials.

Thousands of people in the area lost power during the storms. As of late Friday afternoon, power had mostly been restored, according to the Wisconsin Public Service website.
