Wausau celebration kicks off summer season

Summer's so close, you can hear it, taste it and -- for people at Wausau's Oak Island Park on Friday night -- see it.

"We've been coming every year for three years now so we always do it to start off summer," said Shannon Thomas, who lives in Wausau.

Friday night was the 20th annual summer kick-off event and there was plenty to keep both the young -- and young at heart -- busy.

"I'm looking forward to doing the bouncy house looking forward to seeing if I can find any old friends," said Kai Thomas, who lives in Wausau.

"It's great for kids," said Shannon. "My son and I love to listen to the music and we eat a lot of junk food and just kind of hang out."

The DC Everest jazz band took the stage first, followed by Wausau West's jazz band.

"You get to do pretty much whatever you want and it's a lot of fun just to show off what you got and learn from others about it," said Brenna Ohrmundt, who played with the Wausau West jazz band.

After spending the winter months cooped up inside, many said they're excited for the freedom summer brings.

"There's a lot of stuff to do in Wausau," said Brenna. "We're just excited to be free because it's summer and we've been working a lot during the school year."

"I think of these warm days where I get to just hang out and do what I want," said Kai.

Doing what they want, playing what they want and eating what they want too -- because that's what summer is all about.
