UPDATE: Police clear scene in Rib Mountain

Authorities say the man they were looking for has returned home.

A Lt. with the Marathon Co. Sheriff's Department says the 45-year-old man returned home early Saturday morning.

Law enforcement were searching for the man Friday after the man's mother heard what sounded like a gun shot coming from the man's direction.

When emergency responders arrived. The man was no where to be found.

He later told police the sound came from a lawn mower.

Police have left the scene after surrounding a property in a wooded area on Highway KK in Rib Mountain.

Marathon County Sheriff's Lt. Ted Knoeck told Newsline 9 a woman heard a gunshot from the area where she thought her son was. She called police who began searching for her son, but as of 9:00 p.m. Friday they hadn't found him yet.

Officers say the man was wearing jeans and a dark shirt.

There may be a mental health issue involved, according to Lt. Knoeck, but he wouldn't elaborate.

No other details have been released.

Earlier, a Newsline 9 reporter on scene saw a group of police officers with guns drawn. There were at least 10 squad cars at one point.
