The Wisconsin Woodchucks
relied on the strength of their pitching staff for the second consecutive
inning to beat the Battle Creek Bombers 6-1.
Brooks Braga reached on an error by third baseman Casey Yocum to lead off the
first for the Woodchucks. Braga then stole second base and scored on a single
by Brendon Hayden to put the ‘Chucks on top 1-0 early.
The Bombers would answer right back and tie the game up in the bottom of the
second. Sikes Orvis led off with a walk against Woodchuck starter JD Davis and
later stole second before he scored on a single by Kyle Figgins to make it a
1-1 game.
The score stayed tied at one until the fourth when the Woodchucks took the lead
back. With the bases loaded and one out, Branden Cogswell bounced into a
fielder's choice but beat the relay throw to first, allowing Chevas Numata to
score from third and put the ‘Chucks on top 2-1.
The ‘Chucks would extend their lead in the top of the fifth as Skyler Ewing
stayed hot at the plate. After a two-run home run last night and a double in
the first, Ewing lined a single to right field that scored Gage Green from
second and gave the ‘Chucks a 3-1 lead.
The Woodchucks would score for the third consecutive inning, once again
flashing a little bit of power. With Nate Irving on first and two outs,
Cogswell launched a ball over the right field wall for his first home run of
the season to make it 5-1 in the sixth inning.
The ‘Chucks wouldn't stop there, though, as they added an additional run in the
seventh on an RBI double by Madison Carter that scored Ewing from first. Carter
was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple, but Ewing's run put the
‘Chucks up 6-1.
The score would remain 6-1 until the end of the game as the Woodchucks finished
their four-game road trip with a 3-1 record to improve to 12-13 on the season.
JD Davis went five innings, allowing only one hit and one earned run while
striking out eight as he picked up his first win of the season.
The Woodchucks have an off day Sunday. Their next game will be Monday at
Athletic Park against Madison.
