Drug suspects open fire in Mexico City airport, 3 police officers killed
MEXICO CITY (AP) -
Three Mexican federal policemen are dead after drug trafficking suspects opened fire in a crowded food court at Mexico City's international airport.
As the gunfire erupted, panicked witnesses dove for cover.
One witness says the shooters also wore police uniforms. Authorities are investigating whether the attackers were active-duty police, former officers or impostors.
Mexico's Public Safety Department says the agents who were killed had gone to the airport "to detain suspects linked to drug trafficking" at a terminal there. The statement says that when the suspects found themselves surrounded by police, they opened fire.
Two officers died at the scene. Another died of his wounds later at a hospital.
No suspects were arrested after the shooting. The federal Attorney General's office says an organized crime unit has opened an investigation.
