Jaycee's 4th of July fireworks canceled

A disappointing end to the Jaycees 4th of July Celebration.
Strong winds forced organizers to cancel the fireworks display at Marathon Park.

Thousands had packed the grandstand, only to be told the show was canceled.
Fire officials say right before the show was supposed to start winds changed making conditions too dangerous.

Officials say the decision ultimately came down to safety.

"Things were a go," said Dave Desantis, Wausau Fire Marshal. "By the time we got the public cleared out of a few areas that they weren't supposed be in, the wind direction changed and picked up, and pickup up substantially."

Police say there were no major incidents as the crowd exited a packed grandstand.

The Wausau Fire Marshal says strong winds caused crews to call off the fireworks display.

Earlier in the day, fire officials inspected the area and watered the grass to try and prepare for Wednesday night's show, but they say a storm system that moved through the area later in the evening forced them to call off the show.

Our reporter at Marathon Park says thousands of people had gathered to watch the display and were very disappointed it was canceled.
