UPDATE: 2 firefighters pass out at brush fire in Portage County

Authorities say two firefighters passed out due to the heat, while fighting a large brush fire in Portage County. They were treated and are ok.

Officials on the scene tell Newsline 9 that the fire started around 2:30 p.m. in the Town of Linwood, when a farmer was mowing hay and hit a rock sparking the blaze.

Because of the hot, dry conditions, Portage County authorities say the fire spread quickly in the area of County Road II and Hwy C.

"You wouldn't think it would be that bad at this time of year," said John Steuck, public information officer. "But this year it is, and it got away very quickly. it should have been a minor fire."

DNR officials say the fire grew to 41 acres, forcing 7 fire departments, the DNR, and a DNR airplane to be called in.

"The conditions are just miserable for firefighting, said Steuck. "Terribly hot."

By 8 p.m. crews had contained most of the fire. But a few hard to get to spots have kept crews on scene late into the night.
