It's a busy weekend for Wausau. Two of the cities most anticipated events are just days away.
"Wausau is going to be hopping the next couple of days," Executive Director of Wausau Area Events Kari Rasmussen said.
Three events, at three different locations. Event organizers spent the day setting up the future home of the annual Big Bull Falls Rib Fest and Balloon Rally and Glow.
"There is something for everyone here, whether it be the balloons or the live music or the ribs," Rasmussen said.
Over at the 400 block, the now bare sidewalks will soon be filled with colorful artwork. While the Kayak World Championships will bring in thousands from all over the world.
City leaders say roughly 20,000 people are expected to attend the weekend events. And all those people mean big business for the small city.
"There are a lot of hotel stays, even our out of town ribbers stay in hotels," Rasmussen explained. "Restaurants and gas stations definitely know that something is going on this weekend."
The Plaza Hotel has been preparing for this weekend for months.
"We've completely sold out and have no rooms available," Sales Executive Jessica Barrett said. "We've made sure we have enough rooms, enough staff, we keep the bar open later and order double of everything."
And the story remains the same at nearby restaurants.
At Redeye Brewing Company they have already begun preparing for the weekend's expected rush. Owners say they have even added more staff to try to accommodate the large crowds.
"Our sales increase about 15-20 percent just in one weekend," Co-owner Kevin Eichelberger said.
Big money, for a big weekend, full of free events.
