Washington state college left scrambling by fire

A fire at a small Washington state college has left school officials scrambling to ensure academics aren't adversely affected and grateful that more wasn't lost.

The fire at Heritage University destroyed the school's first building, which housed a cafeteria, bookstore, classrooms and computer servers.

Heritage University sits in central Washington's Yakima Valley, an agricultural belt home to thousands of acres of wine grapes, tree fruit and row crops. Two-thirds of its 1,200 students are minorities, either members of the Yakama Indian Nation or the children and grandchildren of Hispanic farm workers.

Most are the first members of their families to attend college.

University President John Bassett says college officials were already working on a long-term plan for the school and will now consider the lost building as well.
