COLBY (WAOW) -
Runners hit the pavement on Saturday in Colby to honor a fallen firefighter.
Jamison Kampmeyer died while fighting a fire in Abbotsford in March. He worked as a volunteer firefighter in Colby -- as well as with the Marathon County Sheriff's Department.
More than 350 racers took part in Kampmeyer's memorial run -- formerly known as the "Chariots of Cheese" race. Friends of Kampmeyer said they were honored to follow in his footsteps in the race he ran just last year.
"It's important to us because it was important to Jamison," said Ryan Weber, who works with the Marathon County Sheriff's Department. "Jamison participated in the Chariots of Cheese every year. He always showed up at every training and every call with a big smile on his face."
"I'm sure spiritually he'll be running there with us and that'll certainly be on my mind as I go through the course," said Sean McCarthy, who works with the Marathon County Sheriff's Department.
Runners raced in a 5K, 10K and a one mile fun run.
