Wausau teacher not surprised by Mayer's success

Wausau native Marissa Mayer will be the new President and CEO of Yahoo! Inc.

The 37-year-old grew up in the city and graduated from Wausau West High School.

People who knew Mayer told Newsline 9 that her success doesn't come as a shock.

"She was always a student driven to do things," Mayer's 6th grade teacher Wayne Flanagan said.

"We as teachers at Stettin knew that down the road there's just certain kids you just know that are going to make something of themselves."

He said out of thousands of students, Mayer's smarts and humble attitude still stand out.

"She wasn't a show boat I mean just very reserved, very quiet, but she liked challenges."

Mayer went on to graduate from Wausau West in 1993. She later graduated with bachelor's and master's degrees from Stanford.

In an interview with Newsline 9 two years ago, Mayer credited her educational success to Wausau.

"I really think that the foundation that I had here from the school district, one, in terms of being curious and really exploring that curiosity and really surrounding yourself with smart people. I think those were all things that I picked up here," she said in 2010.

In 1999, Mayer went to work at Google and helped the company grow into the powerhouse it is today. Now that she's moving on, she says she's thrilled. In a tweet, she said, "I'm incredibly excited to start my new role at Yahoo!"

Flanagan said he couldn't be happier for her.

"She was appreciative of her education in Wausau and we as Wausau teachers are really proud of her accomplishments," he said.
