Fun with a gun, shooting skeet

Posted:

Just north of Wausau sits a lot of 60 acres with rolling hills and forested woodlands. But it's not just about the scenery.

I headed there to work on basic gun handling and shooting at a moving target.

To hit that moving target, I learned you need to start with the right gun.

"If it doesn't fit well, you're not going to shoot well and you're not going to break targets, and feeling good is what the games about," said NRA Certified Instructor Randy Ullmer.

I found my perfect fit in a 20 gauge shotgun. After a safety briefing, we were given eye protection and ear protection. After some much-needed coaching, I nailed my target.

We decided to step up the difficulty by standing on an elevated platform with five different levels called a five stand. This adds a variety of target presentations, as the inconsistency complicates the challenge.

Overall, not bad for my first time. But it's definitely something I need to try again.
