Marshfield Clinic President: Layoffs will be spread out across clinic system

We have new information about layoffs at Marshfield Clinic locations. The clinic announced yesterday that it's in the process of laying off more than 100 employees.

But clinic leaders say the cuts will be spread throughout their 50 plus locations.

The Marshfield Clinic President and CEO Dr. Brian Ewert says in all, nearly 150 positions are being eliminated.

They'll cut some of those jobs by not filling open positions, but for 119 employees, they're out of work.

Clinic leaders say a number of reasons are behind the cuts. Some are as simple as fewer patients coming through their doors.

Another—higher deductible health plans.

And Ewert says that has more people being cautious when it comes to health care. He says those employees let go will have the first opportunity at other jobs within the system.

"In other places we've had an increase, which has given us the ability to continue to try and be sensitive and caring to our employees. So they get the first option of positions that may be opening up in other places in the organization as some positions are decreasing," Ewert said.

The Marshfield Clinic has more than 8,000 employees across the state. These layoffs are less than two percent of that work force.

Clinic leaders say the cuts are already in progress, and that employees have already been told or have already been let go.

Ewert also says he thinks this is it—he says other jobs may be adjusted as needed, but for now, the cuts are over.
