Walker requests SBA declaration for Douglas Co.

Gov. Scott Walker has asked the U.S. Small Business Administration to declare Douglas County a disaster area because of last month's floods.

Walker says the declaration would allow flood victims to apply for federal low-interest loans. He says those loans would allow people who suffered flood damage to begin renovations.

In June, a storm dumped 8 to 10 inches of rain over Douglas County, causing flash flooding that damaged homes and businesses.

Disaster assessment teams reported more than 25 homes and businesses sustained significant damage and uninsured losses of more than 40 percent.

Damage to homes and businesses did not meet requirements for a major disaster declaration, so Walker is asking for the SBA declaration.
