Venezuela to pull out of OAS human rights bodies

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -

Venezuela's foreign minister says the country will soon notify the Organization of American States that it's pulling out of a regional human rights convention along with two bodies that serve as arbiters of human rights violations.

Nicolas Maduro told the Associated Press that President Hugo Chavez's government will in the coming hours turn over a document to OAS Secretary-General Jose Miguel Insulza formalizing the decision. He said that will begin a required one-year period after which Venezuela will no longer be a party to the American Convention on Human Rights.

Chavez said Tuesday that his government will pull out of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in protest after a ruling that he called a travesty. His decision was strongly criticized by government opponents.
