Mallards Grand Slam Powers Down Rafters

Wisconsin Rapids, WI – July 26, 2012 – The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (6-13, 22-31 overall) fell behind early and stayed behind, dropping to the Madison Mallards (14-4, 30-23 overall) at Witter Field Thursday in front of the largest crowd of the season, 1,862 Witter Faithful.

Off of Augey Bill (SO, Univ. of Arizona), Madison scored a run in each of the first three innings. John Welborn scored two of them. The Mallard's center fielder went 3-for-4 with a walk. He also stole two bases to extend his league lead to 30 steals. Bill kept the crooked number off the board but his performance was his weakest of the season. The Mallards scored four runs, each in different innings, off the lefthander in 5.1 innings.

Wisconsin Rapids got it closer with two in the fourth, getting RBI base-knocks from Pat Kelly (FR, Univ. of Nebraska) and Josh Cyr (JR, Univ. of North Alabama). That made the score 3-2, the closest it would be the whole game.

Derek Fisher hit a solo blast in the fifth to make it 4-2, the final run surrendered by Bill. The Mallards left fielder has hit a homer in four straight games.

Off of reliever Ronnie Muck (SO, Univ. of Illinois), the Mallards broke it open in the seventh. Muck got a double play in the only batter he faced in the 6th, but his first full inning did not go well. After a groundout, he allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases for Jeff Zimmerman. Zimmerman blasted his seventh homer of the summer to the opposite field, this time a grand slam, to give the Mallards a commanding 8-2 lead. They would tally two more in the ninth, unearned, off of Tommy Danczyk (SO, Univ. of St. Thomas).

Bill took the loss for the second straight start, falling to 2-2. Bobby Poyner made his third consecutive quality straight and picked up the win to improve to 3-0. The Rafters have now lost four straight and seven of their last eight.

The two clubs take on each other both Friday and Saturday night at Warner Park in Madison. Ben Heller (3-3, 4.22 ERA) goes for the Rafters, and he will square off against Kurt Killer (2-1, 3.69 ERA). First pitch Friday from the Duck Pond is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
