Laurie Kurtzweil is the August Jefferson Award winner. Laurie is from Edgar and involved in many community volunteers activities. One is the Luke Kaiser Co-Ed Kickball Tournament which took place July 27-28.
The event honors Luke Kaiser, who died 8 years ago. Memories of the Mosinee High School senior live on during the two day tourney. Laurie says, "He passed away from leukemia, but he is still here every year we do this. He was an awesome kid. I wish he was still here."
Laurie spends countless hours organizing the tournament. The money raised from the event, goes to the Luke Kaiser Fund, which provides scholarships to needy high school students.
Luke's mother is thankful for the efforts of Laurie, and others, who make it all happen. Diane Kaiser says, "It is overwhelming.. I have to say for what they have done in Luke's memory. "
For the past 8 summers 16 teams have gathered at the ball park which draws large crowds.
Laurie says the memory of a wonderful teen and a sense of community keep her coming back. "It's close to my heart and rewarding at the end when the kids give the money it is so rewarding and an unbelievable feeling you have."
