Former Marathon Co. court clerk charged with stealing from law firm

Marathon County prosecutors have charged a Wausau woman with stealing thousands of dollars from the law firm where she had worked until March.

According to the criminal complaint, Susan Adams, 58, faces seven forgery charges and one theft charge. If convicted, she could be sentenced to 45 years behind bars and face $80,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, Adams most recently worked in the Marathon County Clerk of Courts office. She has since been fired. The current charges do not include accusations of taking any county money.

Prosecutors say Adams stole more than $5,000 from Hess, Dexter, Reinertson and Brunner. According to the police report, Adams told officers she used some of the law firm's money to pay back a $120,000 restitution bill she owes from a 1994 federal conviction for embezzling $119,000 from M & I bank in Wausau.
