Alleged woman drug boss sent from Mexico to US

Mexican officials say they have extradited to the U.S. the suspected drug trafficker known as the "Queen of the Pacific. "

The attorney general's office says Sandra Avila Beltran was handed over Thursday to U.S. marshals who took her to Miami to face cocaine-trafficking charges. She had been acquitted of similar charges in Mexico and her defense argued unsuccessfully that meant she should not be extradited.

Avila was arrested in 2007 sipping coffee in a Mexico City diner. She has said she is innocent of accusations that she was a major part of the Sinaloa cartel. She is the niece of Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo, the imprisoned "godfather" of Mexican drug smuggling.

Prosecutors allege Avila spent more than a decade moving to the top of Mexico's drug trade.
