UWSP Upward Bound program saved

Funding has been renewed for a program in Central Wisconsin that helps low income students prepare for college.

Federal funding for the Upward Bound program at UWSP had ended in June. But leaders say the program will continue for at least five more years.

Upward Bound helps low income students at 10 area high schools, by helping them develop skills to be successful in college.

"I really thought we were not going to be around," UWSP Upward Bound Program Director Henry Wojnicki said. "But I always had that spark of hope and my students did, and now the word is already traveling over Facebook and other social media," he added.

The program helps more than 90 students every year and it costs more than $400,000 a year to run.
