Ryan traveled a perilous budget path to veep spot

Mitt Romney's new running mate took a tough road to political stardom -- he's spent years trying to cut spending on popular government programs.

Rep. Paul Ryan's ideas for slicing away at Medicare, food stamps and virtually every other government program are politically risky. But they have made him a hero to the Republican Party's budget hawks. Now that he's Romney's vice presidential pick, Ryan and his ideas are at the center of the party.

He wants to shrink the deficit by cutting trillions of dollars in spending and limiting Medicare's growth. He would hand off Medicaid control to the states.

But Ryan won't look to higher taxes to fix the nation's finances. He would cut the top rate to 25 percent from 35 percent.
