UPDATE 8:00 p.m. Dozens of supporters have started to file into Tommy
Thompson's campaign headquarters.
The small ballroom filled up quickly minutes after the
polls closed. The buzz around the room is the polls have been quiet yet steady
throughout the day.
The atmosphere is upbeat as supporters wave signs and
chat with one another.
Thompson is expected to arrive shortly. Staffers say he
will watch the results from a private room and then address the crowd.
UPDATE 6:30 p.m. Former Governor Tommy Thompson says he's "quietly confident" as he awaits tonight's election results.
Thompson is hoping to add a new act to his long political career. This is Thompson's sixth state-wide election and he's one every one of them up to this point.
Thompson was elected to four terms as the governor of Wisconsin and says that political background makes him the best candidate to replace retiring senator Herb Kohl. Thompson says he plans on taking bold steps to balance the budget and restore America
Earlier today Thompson made one final stop in Madison, where he cast his own vote. Thompson is expected to arrive to his campaign headquarters in Waukesha just after the polls close.
1:15 p.m. Four Republican candidates are vying to take on Democrat Tammy Baldwin for the chance to represent Wisconsin in the United States Senate. One of them is former Governor Tommy Thompson.
Thompson has remained atop the GOP field according to Marquette Law poll numbers. Thompson is running on the message to restore America. He told Newsline 9 he plans to do that by taking steps to balance the budget.
Thompson spent four terms as governor of Wisconsin.
Thompson faces Eric Hovde, Mark Neumann and Jeff Fitzgerald inTuesday's primary election. The winner will face Baldwin in November.
