Groups gather for egg drop in Wausau

At most pantries, you'll find many of the same items. Things like canned food, cereal and noodles. But some groups in Marathon Co. are looking to change that, with eggs.

"They're the perfect food. They're high in protein, can be made for breakfast, lunch or dinner," said Ann Lucas.

The Early Bird Rotary Club will buy eggs twice a month and give them to the United Way's Hunger Coalition. Those eggs are then passed on to the food pantries and distributed throughout the community.

The initiative couldn't come at a better time as pantries in Marathon Co. are experiencing a heavier need.

"We've seen an increase between 35 and 45 percent," said JoAnn Janikowski.

One of the pantries, The Neighbors' Place provides fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the summer. But leaders say this new program will mean fresh food, like eggs, will be available even in the winter.

"Bringing eggs into our pantry is one of those things everyone knows how to make," said Tom Rau.

The eggs that are being delivered to pantries in the community come from Thurs Farms in the town of Hamburg.

"It's really nice that they are doing local and giving us a chance to help out too," said Sandy Thurs.

The members at the Early Bird Rotary Club are excited at the chance to help over the next year.

"We're estimating over ten-thousand eggs will be given to food pantries," said Ann Lucas.
